Visitor to Goldthorpe – John McGovern

A visitor to Goldthorpe this week-end and one whom many residents will endevour to hear is Mr. John McGovern MP for Shettleston, Glasgow.

He in addressing a public meeting in the Welfare Hall on Sunday, organised by the Thurnscoe, Goldthorpe and district Independent Labour Party.

Mr. McGovern is one of the best-known propagandists in the country.

With Mr. John McNair he went to Spain a year ago to investigate the tales of atrocities against the Churches. He travelled throughout Spain and on his return wrote his famous pamphlet—”Why Bishops Back Franco”.

He has been a leader of hunger marches and together with Messrs. James Maxton, Campbell Stephen and George Buchanan, forms the ‘bloc’ of the four L.L.P. Members of Parliament.
