Brave Goldthorpe Man

Cpl Percy Smith
(K.O.Y.L.I.),

Goldthorpe, has been awarded the Military Medal for conspicuous gallantry in June 1917, awarded when attacking the enemy positions near Mount Sorrel.

“At about 9 o’clock on morning of the attack the enemy counter-attacked and entered the original British front line. Cpl Smith immediately went forward along the trench with a small party, and although the enemy were far superior in numbers, they were successfully ejected after a hand-to-hand fight, a result attributable largely to this NCOs gallant example. This NCO was subsequently wounded by a shell.”

Corporal Smith has been serving since October 1914.
