of Goldthorpe, a Hickleton Main miner who enlisted three months after the outbreak of war, has been awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for good work in hand to hand encounters, particularly at the Hohenzollern Redoubt in October 1915, when he bombed a batch of German single-handed and saved his wounded officer.

Before settling at Goldthorpe, private Rogers lived in Mexborough, and was employed at Manvers Main.
