Soldier – Brooke G.C.– Military Medal

November 1918

Mexborough and Swinton Times November 30, 1918

Private G.C. Brooke
West Riding Regiment

Private Brooke, Goldthorpe, has been awarded the Military Medal for gallantry on October 29.

Our forces were held up by the enemy, and the Company to which Private Brooke was attached had used up all its ammunition.

A wounded man lay across the open and Brooke crept across in view of the enemy and brought back the magazine of the man. This he was under machine gun fire from Germans and also from five hostile aeroplanes.

A singular feature of the incident was that the wounded man was a relation of his – Mr W Evans, of Bolton on Dearne.
