Pit Baths in use at Goldthorpe

The wives of Goldthorpe colliery miners have been the happiest women in the district this week. For instead of their husbands coming home off a shift covered in cold dust, they have been arriving home spotless and shining after taking advantage of the new pithead baths, which were opened on Monday.

The baths – the most up to date in the coalfield – with a luxury well equipped medical centre and canteen, and been provided in accordance with the National coal Board’s policy to make available at every colliery, the best facilities for mines, and will cost, it is understood, over £77,000.

NUM branch secretary at the pit, Mr Frank Warboys, told a “South Yorkshire Times” reporter that the men were delighted with the scheme – especially the baths.

Earlier in the month, the public were allowed to see the new baths and on Monday the miners used them for the first time.

Superintendent is Mr Richard Haigh.

The building is designed as a single-storey installation to accommodate 648 men and 72 officials.

Miners will be able to have sandwiches, cakes, tea and coffee in the canteen, and injuries will be speedily dealt with by the medical staff.
