Altered Licence
Goldthorpe Motorist Sent To Prison

Fines amounted to £15 were imposed by the Doncaster West Riding Bench yesterday and Charles W Gibbons (40), miner of Goldthorpe for driving a car which did not have a road fund licence, for altering it the licence, and for exhibiting the altered licence on his car.

The chairman (Mr G.E.Cook Yarborough) said the fines would have to be paid forthwith on the defendant would have to go to prison for three months.

Gibbons said he could not pay the money and was sent to prison.

The chairman said to give us: “You have gone into the witness box and told lie after lie, and if your story is true and to be believed, it means that the evidence of three police officers, is perjury.

I can tell you that you have not made your case any the better by taking that attitude and persisting in it. You have deliberately used his car while knowing it had an altered licence.”
