Goldthorpe Motorist Cleared

George Edward Wigfield of Barnsley Road, Goldthorpe, near Rotherham, successfully appealed against a conviction for dangerous driving and a sentence of three months’ imprisonment with hard labour, imposed the Doncaster West Riding magistrates.

Mr. G. W. Wrangham (for respondents) said that Wigfield’s sentence was a sequel to a fatal accident on the Doncaster-Barnsley road near Scawsby, on the night of September 4, in which Frank Bowkett, of Scawsby, was killed.

Wigfield, who was represented by Mr. Clive Salter, said in evidence that he was driving at about 30 miles an hour, keeping close to his proper side. The man appeared to stagger or lurch across the road.

The appeal was allowed, with costs.
