this match attracted a large number of spectators to the Mexborough Town enclosure. St James had the best of things during the first 10 minutes, then Goldthorpe broke away and Eades scored.

Spurred on by this success, the Institute went at it in great style, and a moment or two later they netted the ball for a second time, but the point was disallowed for offside.

during the first of Goldthorpe and lost a man by injury. Whilst the second half was quite young they had the misfortune to lose another of their players, and for the rest of the game and only nine men. Although so heavily handicapped, they held their own remarkably well, and play in the second half was equally shared by the two teams.
