For keeping and using betting houses three Goldthorpe men were each fined £6 at Doncaster on Saturday.
They were Thomas W. Marsh (46, Benjamin C. Scriven (39), and Leonard Banks (40), bookmakers, all of Goldthorpe.
It was stated that while Marsh’s house was kept under a three days’ observation an average of 20 people a day visited it and for the three days it was visited by 61, 30 of whom were women.
In Scriven’s case 35 people, including 15 women, were seen to visit the betting house. Of 34 people who visited Banks’ hut ten were women.
For reporting to one of the above betting houses. Helen Jones (47), Mary Armer , (43), Sarah Kilner (43), all housewives, Joe Humphries (62), retired and Cyril Dainty (27), miner, all of Goldthorpe, were bound over for 12 months in the sum of £5 and ordered to pay 4s. costs
