Hickleton Main Starts Short-time

The district, which includes the three mining villages of Goldthorpe, Thurnscoe and Bolton-on-Dearne, was dealt another hard blow this week end.

The majority of the male population of the three villages relied on the Hickleton and Barnborough Main Collieries for their livelihood. The closing of the Barnborough Colliery has thrown 3.000 men out of work, and local tradespeople were already feeling the effects of the increased poverty in the district.

For the first time this year, short time has now been introduced at the Hickleton Main Colliery, which employs over 2,000 men.

A notice posted at the pithead stated that the colliery would not open for work from Thursday night until next Tuesday.
