Barry Wins in Jim Clark’s Car

Power comes in at 5,000 r.p.m, on the white Corttina; peak output of 185 b.h.p. pushes the little five-seater saloon along at 150 m.p.h. And when it was placed in the hands of Goldthorpe racing driver Barry Pearson, it ate up all-comers to give Barry firsts in both saloon car races at Oulton Park on Saturday.

As a result all these two very convincing win – Barry’s first drives in a Four – Barry is being backed by the Ford Motor Company next year when he plans to take part in both British and European saloon car championship – which will mean racing abroad in such circuits as Nurburgring and Spar.

On The Power

“I had never driven this car before Saturday. and, in fact, I got off to quite a bad start, said Barry this week at the Marr Service Station, where he is in Partnership with his father, and where his trophies and the Lotus-Cortina okay.

“However, as soon as I started turning on the power I was away, and by the end of the race there was no-one near me.”

The car, which used to be owned by the Ford works team, and driven by Jim Clark, has a 100 c.c. twin overhead cam engine developed by B.R.M.and with the newly developed Lucas fuel injection.

Although he had previously raced Mini-Coopers—which he still prepares when he is not racing—Barry, who lives at 14, George Street, Goldthorpe, was asked to drive the Cortina by the syndicate that owns it.

In Europe

“Now we are planning to race it over Britain and Europe. And in the longer races I will be partnered by a friend of mine, Tom Dean, who is at present racing in South Africa. We shall be taking part in both British and European saloon car championships,” said Barry.

Barry learned to drive racing cars at John Cooper’s school when, he he was 17. Now, 11 years later he is a record holder at a number of Circuits and last year’s 1300 c.c.
