Now The Challenges Roll In
Conisbro” Veterans Domino Prowess Excites Interest
The five “invincibles,” a team of veteran domino players from the Eagle and Child Hotel, Conisbrough, who challenged any team in South Yorkshire “so we can really enjoy a hard game,” have had their challenge accepted by a team of much younger men.
He veterans, accompanied by a “busload of supporters,” will travel from Conisbrough to Barnburgh Main Colliery Officials Club tomorrow (Saturday) for the challenge match.
Their opponents are Messrs. Robert Edwards (49), Edmund Green- (53), Harold Clayton (49), Ernest Eaton (64) and Arthur Roberts (57), all officials at the colliery.
If experience is anything to go by the Conisbrough team are certain winners. Their ages total 330 years compared to the 272 years of the Barnburgh men.
Mr. Arthur Roberts, treasurer of the Officials’ Club, told our reporter that they had accepted the challenge “‘ to give the old boys a night out. Mind you, we shall try our best to beat them.” Mr. Roberts said that the Officials’ Club would provide refreshments for the visiting team.
Mr. Gomer Davies, landlord of the Eagle and Child, said that applications had poured in since an article appeared in our last issue about the domino “invincibles.” Most of the applications came from local teams, but one came from Thorne.
Saturday’s match may therefore be the first of several games the will enjoy. Mr Davies hopes to arrange further fixtures which will take the form of alternate home and away games.
