To Repay £10 Relief
Thomas Leonard Raw, of Goldthorpe, charged at Doncaster West Riding Court, yesterday, with obtaining relief by false pretences, was said to have received £10 in relief and at the same time got £15 in wages from an insurance company at the rate 30s. per week.
The period was between February 24th and April 19th and Mr. Furniss, who prosecuted on behalf of the Insurance Unemployment Board, said defendant was an educated man and had given the authorities considerable amount of trouble and they wanted an example made of him.
Defendant’s explanation was that he was under the impression that he could earn up to a certain amount and the same time obtain relief.
He was ordered to repay the £10 at the rate of 5s. per week, and was informed that in default of payment imprisonment would follow.
