To Covent Garden
From the mining town of Goldthorpe to Covent Garden Theatre, London, has gone 30 years-old Mr. Stanley Cooper, only son of Mr. and Mrs. George E. Cooper of Barnsley Road, Goldthorpe. Mr. Cooper has just signed a three months contract to appear in Benjamin Britten’s new opera “Billy Budd” opening at Covent Garden on December 1st.
Mr. Cooper, who is a bass singer, began his singing career with West Melton Victoria Male Voice Choir about ten years ago. Since then, he has sung at Rhyl, Llandudno, Colwyn Bay, Bridlington, Blackpool and, most recently, at the Embassy, Skegness.
He is now living in Hertfordshire and, until two weeks ago, worked at an aircraft factory. In May he left Goldthorpe where he was a deputy at the colliery. He has been married ten years and has a six-years-old son David. He trained under Booth Unwin, Tom Burke, and has sung under Norman Allen. He is at present rehearsing for the December opera.
