The English Cup – Preliminary Round
Ardsley 7, Goldthorpe Com. 1.
The champions of the Swinton Alliance came a terrible cropper at Ardsley in the extra preliminary round of the English Cup. and found the home team altogether too good for them.
Goldthorpe were three down at the interval, but early in the second half trey reduced the lead. Ardsley. however, came with another rush, and put on four further goals.
Maltby 2, Hemingfield Ath.0.
Hemingfield had a hopeless task at Maltby but gave a good account of themselves, and although they were beaten their defence showed up well throughout. Maltby were distinctly the stronger side and there was never any doubt about their victory. It is a tribute to the Wombwell junior team that the score was so modest. Draper scored both Maltby’s goals, one in each half.
Conisboro’ Ath 0 Wath Ath 14.
Wath Athletic carried on like cricketers at Conisboro’ on Saturday, and won an extremely one-sided game as indicated above. Conisboro’ were beaten in any case, but to make matters worse they turned out with a weak and incomplete side and this was further aggravated by an accident to one the Conisboro’ players who had to be carried off unconscious. Wath did pretty much as they liked and scored steadily and me monotonously.
Rawmarsh Athletic 0 Denaby United 1.
Denaby United took no risks with their tie at Rawmarsh, and sent their strongest team to dismiss Rawmarsh Athletic from the Cup. The precaution was justified, for Denaby could do no more than get through by the only goal of the match, and that scored very late by Hodgkiss, who beat the Athletic back cleverly, and was left with the goal at his mercy. It was a poor game in which the defence easily predominated over the attack. Denahy did not give of their best, and seemed to drop towards the level of their opponents. As it was, they might easily have been pushed to a re-play, for in the era and half Perkins got through for Rawmarsh and shot hard at point-blank range, Robinson bringing off a desperate save
Kilnhurst United 4, Jump W.M.C. O.
There was a poor attendance at Kilnhurst on Saturday. when Kilnhurst United met Jump W.M.C. in the preliminary round of the English Cup. The game was evenly contested in the first half, and both sides pressed hard. The prevailing wind was a big set back. Johnson, receiving a pass from the left wing, hit the crossbar with a hot shot. In the second half, the home team played the better game. but they failed in front of goal. Bagnall. For Jump, saved the situation many times. He was the out- standing man on his side. The visiting forwards played bad towards the end, and their kicking larked judgment.
