Military Medallist

The courage of a Goldthorpe soldier has been acknowledged by the award of the Military Medal to Sgt. Austin Tarmey (28), younger son of Mr. and Mrs. M. Tarmey, of 118, Main Street, Goldthorpe.

For three hours he moved among mortars in a flaming ammunition dump, giving out orders although under heavy fire.  He supervised the supplies of ammunition and led a party to collect it from a trench near the burning ammunition although over a hundred rounds were ablaze and liable to explode at any minute, Sgt. Tarmey again led a party to the dump and put out the flames with earth.

“It was greatly due to the fine efforts of Sgt. Tarmey that the mortars were maintained in action during the attack and were able to fire over 1,000 rounds at the enemy and inflict heavy casualties,” reads the citation.

Sgt. Tarmey is not married and before the war worked as a haulage hand at Hickleton Main.  Another brother, Cpl. Edward Tarmey, has been in the Army 3 ½ years and for some time has been in the Burmese area.
