With the Royal Corps of signals in West Africa is L/Corporal, Charles Ernest Smeaton (20), son of Mr and Mrs. S. Smeaton, 3 Hickleton Road, Barnburgh.

He was formerly employed as an electrician at Barnburgh Main colliery. He is having a good time and says he does not think West Africa is so much the white man’s grave as it is reported to be in. L/Cpl tenant Corporal Smeaton is married.
