Sheffield Amateur Title

Goes Outside the City for the First Time.

For the first time since its inception, the Sheffield and District Amateur Championship has been won by a player outside city, as was bound to be the case with two district men left in the final.

The honour goes H. Townsley (Goldthorpe), who beat N. H. Yates (Thurnscoe) in the final by 99 points.

The game was played at the Cutlers’ Hall, Sheffield, at the conclusion of the sessions in the premier game. Play on Saturday never rose to the great heights of Friday, safety play being very much indulged in.

Townsley’s brilliant rally on Friday night, when he turned deficit 105 into a load of 115, seemed to have put Yates out of his stride, for he did not play ashe had done in some of his earlier games. While pulling off some splendid strokes occasionally, he failed remarkably easy ones, even Townsley suffering this way at times.

The best breaks on Saturday Mere 55 . 62. 27 (twice), 68, 50, 43, 30 40. 27/ 52 by Townsley. and 43. 52, 22. 25. 18,’ 53, 17, 28. 30, 32, 50, 24. 29 41 bv Yates.

Result: H. TOWNSLEY (Goldthorpe) … 1.600 N. H. YATES (Thurnscoe) 1.501

At the conclusion the handsome silver cup was presented to the winner the donor, Mr. D. F. Hogan who congratulated Townsley on his victory and his wonderful play. Townsley replied in few well-chosen words.
