Mr, W. Clayton’s Appointment
Mr. Walter Clayton, M.B.E., Lorne Villas, Thurnscoe, was appointed by the West Riding Education Authority, at County Hall, Wakefield, on Tuesday, from a short list of five candidates, as Headmaster of Highgate Council School, Goldthorpe. in succession to the late Mr. Ben Haigh.
A native of Dinnington. Mr. Clayton went to Goldthorpe in 1923 and attended Goldthorpe Council School and Wath Grammer School. From 1930 to 1932 he received his teaching training at University College, Nottingham, where he obtained his teacher’s certificate, and in 1932 joined the staff of the Hill Modern School, Thurnscoe.
He joined the Army in 1940. For two years he was an instructor in survey at the School of Artillery at Lark but joined the 10th Surrey Regiment and went overseas as commander of a survey troop. He worked with the 8th Corps and in November, 1911, formed a mortar location troop in Holland.
