Month for A Blow
A sentence of a month’s imprisonment was passed on Frederick Hulley (21), haulage hand, Adwick-on-Dearne, who was convicted at Doncaster on Friday of causing grievous bodily harm to George Reginald Hall (26), of Goldthorpe.
The evidence showed that Hall, Halley and other youths discussed on August 7th at Mexborough alleged molestation by a Man of the sister of one of the youths. Hall asked when it occurred. He was told “on a Thursday,” and replied “I was in Wombwell Baths. One of the youths asked Hall if he had a knife. Hall produced one and Ridley then struck him on the head with a hedgestake.
Hulley was said to nurse a grievance against Hall on the score that the latter “touted” Hulley and his girl.
Mr. Wilberforce Bridge, defending, submitted that Halley struck the blow because Hall brandished a knife in the air and frightened a youth, and Hall had the reputation of having been for a time unstable. Halley struck the blow to protect the youth.
