Memorial To Former Rector
Barnburgh Dedication Service
MISS COLE (centre, front row) with friends who attended Sunday’s dedication service at Barnburgh.
A memorial to a former Rector of Barnburgh, the late Rev. George E. Cole, M.A., in the form of sacramental burses and veils and a Prayer Book for the clergy stall, was dedicated at Barnburgh Parish Church during the Sunday evening service by the Rector, the Rev. E. P. Cook. It was following the visit of Miss M. K. Cole, daughter of the Rev. Cole, to Barnburgh in August when she renewed acquaintance with old friends, the parishioners and others who remembered the Rev. Cole’s incumbency at Barnburgh from 1887 util he retired in 1901, conceived the idea of raising by public subscription a gift memorial to the parish church. So generous was the response that the original gift of burses and veils in the four liturgical colours was increased to include a prayer book which replaces the one in use at the church since 1876.
Miss Cole was present at the dedication. During her father’s incumbency she was a devoted worker in the parish and has never lost contact with those with whom she associated herself there. Mr. Wilton Cole, who was unable to be present, joined in the gift. Mr. Cole was lately Professor of Elocution at the Royal Academy of Music. Their mother, the late Mrs. Cole, composed numerous hymn tunes commonly used to-day. Miss K. Creighton, of Swinton, was secretary of the gift appeal, and Mrs, Andrews (Barnburgh) and Mr. J. Hampshire (Mexborough) were joint treasurers.
