At, Doncaster, yesterday, Paul Deakin, miner, Goldthorpe, was charged with deserting his wife, Lily . The parties were married in 1916, and for a, time defendant went to live in Scotland. He then returned to Doncaster. Defendant had not done anything towards her support since January, 1919
Complainant said that when they were married defendant was perfectly aware that for some years she had lived with an Italian, named Ferrari, as his wife, and had a child by him. When she married, she described herself as a spinster, and she had lived with Ferrari in Italy, Montreal, and Grimsby. She admitted telling defendant that Ferrari was dead, and she believed it was true at the time. She left Ferrari when he joined up to serve in the Italian army.
In defence, it was urged that defendant believed she was a married woman.
Defendant had offered 10s., and then 15s. a week, and the magistrates made an order for 25s. a week.
