Hard Labour for Goldthorpe Burglar

Herbert Harvey Smith (29), 82, Bolton Road, Highgate, Goldthorpe, was sentenced to eighteen mouths’ hard labour at the Quarter Sessions at Wakefield, for breaking and entering and stealing various goods and cash. Fourteen charges altogether were taken into consideration.

The first of the three main charges was of breaking into the premises of William Gomersall, chemical worker and off-licence holder. Carlisle Street, Kilnhurst, and stealing £2 3s 10 ½ d in cash, two metal watches, a silver double albert , with medal, an overcoat, two shirts, an O.B.E. medal, a part-filled bottle of whisky, the lot valued at £2 15s 4d.; and 13s. from the electric meter. The offence occurred between March 3rd and 4th.

The second charge was of breaking into the house, of Charles Graham, colliery undermanager, Tor Lea, Stump Cross Road, Wath, on January 6th, and stealing a 9-ct. gold watch, string of amber beads. string pearls, cut-glass howl, three gold dress studs in case, bottle of whisky, and cash, total value £22 17s 6d.

The third charge was of breaking into the house of Clarence Beckett, steel worker, 48, Carlisle Street, Kilnhurst, on March 3, and stealing 7s. belonging to the Rotherham Corporation from the meter.

The police stated that Smith had persisted in a life of crime, and that nothing could be said in his favour.
