Goldthorpe’s New Arrival

September 1949

South Yorkshire Times, September 24, 1949

Pickhill Avenue, Goldthorpe, has a new resident. He arrived unannounced a few days ago and is now a firm favourite with the inhabitants. But oh! his manners. Without so much as a by your leave he enters people’s homes. And not by doors alone, for windows are equally convenient for him. For “Jackie” the Jackdaw is no respecter of etiquette.

“Jackie’s” first task on arrival was to become acquainted with his new neighbours. They received him coldly. Undeterred, he continued his visits and is now known to one and all. Efforts to frighten him away proved unsuccessful, and only on the receipt of a few crumbs will he depart. Now he has become something of a pet in the Avenue.

Although “Jackie’s” manners are bad, he has one redeeming feature—his honesty. As yet residents have missed nothing yet from their homes following his visits.
