Goldthorpe Contractor’s £20 Fine
National Health Insurance Offences
A fine of £20 was imposed by the Doncaster West. Riding magistrates on Tuesday, on a Goldthorpe haulage contractor, Norman H. Yates, on six summonses of failing to pay national health insurance contributions for an employee, George Munton; failing to return insurance cards to Munton; failing to pay national health insurance for Munton; failing to pay for Joseph Luke Collumbine ; and failing to return insurance cards to Collumbine (two summonses).
Defendant did not appear, and Mr. J. S. W. Grose, prosecuting for the Ministry of Labour, stated that when Munton started his employment with defendant he gave him his cards but they were never returned. Munton asked several times, and was told eventually that they had been lost in a removal. Defendant told Munton that he would get duplicate cards and stamps.
Miss Black was seen by an inspector, and at once offered to pay, but that was against the Act. At least five visits were paid to Yates’s home, but he was away each time. The maid and Yates’s wife were seen and notes left, but no communication was received by the authorities. Deductions were not made every week from Munton’s wages. It was during the investigations about Munton’s cards that Collumbine’s card was seen.
The magistrates ordered Yates to pay £5 15s. 6d. for the stamps which had not been affixed, in addition to the £20 fine.
