‘Army” Couple’s Golden Wedding
Fifty years of marriage were celebrated on Monday by Mr. Thomas and Mrs. Lily Fenwick, aged 71 and 70 respectively, of 14, Holmecroft Road, Goldthorpe.
The couple were married at Tow Law, County Durham and moved to Goldthorpe 32 years ago.
Mr. Fenwick started work in the pit when he was 11 years old. After moving to Goldthorpe he became a shot-firer at Goldthorpe Colliery, and latterly has worked as a watchman.
He has been an active member of the Salvation Army, which he joined at the age of 18. At Goldthorpe he has held the position of Corps. secretary, and Sunday School Superintendant, as well as being a bandsman for over 50 years.
The couple have three married daughters whose families are also Salvation Army members.
Messages of congratulation were received from friends locally, from, Canada, New Zealand, and from their nephew Mr. Gordon Swansbury who is headmaster of the Salvation Army’s largest school for the blind in Africa at Thika.
