Father Curran of Goldthorpe
We regret to record the death of Father Martin Curran, of the Catholic Mission, at Goldthorpe, which took place on Monday evening at his home in Goldthorpe. The reverend gentleman’s demise was very sudden.
During the Christmas and New Year weeks he organised an entertainment and a tea for his people, and was present at both festivities, though labouring under serious lung trouble. His death was due to pneumonia, which revealed its presence only on Saturday night.
Father Curran had been at Goldthorpe about seven months, having previously been at Denaby, where his charitable work during the recent strike endeared him to all the poor. He was beloved everywhere for his simplicity of manner and directness of speech. He was an Oxford man, and died at the early age of 38.
His big, bluff, genial presence will be greatly missed at Goldthorpe. The reverend gentleman’s remains were yesterday removed to Denaby, where they now rest in the mortuary chapel of the Catholic Church. The interment will take place in the Catholic burial ground on Monday.
