Dearne Urban Council By-election

Who’s Who in Tomorrow’s Contest in Four Wards

20 candidates will go to the poll tomorrow (Saturday) in the Dearne Urban Council by-election to fill 13 seats on the Council caused by the disqualification only King’s Bench Divisional Court decision of 17 past and present members of the authority.

Polling will be from 8 am to 9 pm, and will he followed immediately by the count at Goldthorpe Welfare Hall. The results are expected about 11 p.m.

Central Ward

Mr. Ernest Austwick  (Lab. )

Underground worker at Highgrove colliery. Has worked at this pit ‘since boyhood and was N.U.M. branch secretary until June, year, when his three years of office expired. Always keenly interested in local government. Joined the Labour Party about 18 months ago and is a co-opted member of Dearne Council Library Committee.

Mr. Albert Henry Bell (Ind.)

Well-known Goldthorpe newsagent. Chairman of Dearne Municipal Sports Club and business manager of Dearne District Drama Group Before becoming a newsagent, he was for 10 years an insurance agent. He resided In Goldthorpe 26 years. This will be his second election contest.

Mr. Norman Crossley (Lab.)

Coalface worker at Dearne Valley Colliery. Active member of the Labour Party since 1948, but never before contested a seat. During the war served as a part-time N.F.S. member and has’ been a member of Highgate and Goldthorpe St. John Ambulance Brigade since their formation three years ago.

Mr. Horace Vincent Rowley (Lab.)

Well known as manager of Messrs Downs and Sons, butchers. Active member of the Labour Party for the past 18 months. Centre. Ward Labour Party treasurer an also a hardworking member of the National Savings Movement.

Mr. Sidney Michaei Tierney (Lab.)

Aged 23. Served in the R.A.F. for five years during the war (four years in the East)

All-India Services Boxing Championships winner, 1944. From 1947-49 played cricket and football  for Dearne Athletic, and during the same period was Central Ward Party secretary, and delegate to Hemsworth Divisional Management Committee. Spent two years at Catholic Workers’ College, Oxford and obtained the University Diploma in Economic and Political Science. Part-time leader of Thurnscoe Hill Youth Club.
