A fine of £5 was imposed at Doncaster on Tuesday on John Fox, a Goldthorpe labourer who was charged with street betting.

Pc. France said he kept observation on Fox near York Street, Thurnscoe on April 20th and saw number of persons go to him. He arrested Fox and took him to the police station where a bookmaker’s clock, £1 14s.2d. in cash and 63 betting slips were found on him.

Fox’s defence was that he had nothing on which to live. “I was doing this for a bit of money.” He did not buy the clock “but a miner fellow called Smith paid £4 for it.”

Fox was fined £5 for a similar offence last year.
