Adventure In Norway
For A Goldthorpe Man With The Rhine Army
The staff of Headquarters 1 (British) Corps in the British Army of the Rhine have established an ” Adventure Centre,” near Kristiansand in Norway, something like the “Outward Bound ” schools in Britain.
At the centre, selected volunteers spend three weeks practising sailing, canoeing, rock climbing, and self-reliance, and one of the recent volunteers is a Goldthorpe man, 21-years-old Ernest Mellor, son of Mr. and Mrs, Ernest Mellor, of 27, Nora Street.
He joined the K.O.Y.L.I. in September, signing on for six years, and he is at present based in Germany. Judging from the letters his parents have received, he is thoroughly enjoying himself.
One postcard sent from Amsterdam, when he was on leave, reads
” You’ve never lived until you’ve seen some of the places out here.” At the “Adventure Centre,” the volunteers spend one week learning seamanship and the handling of small boats, and the next fortnight in their own six-man Norwegian built sailing boats.
The soldiers hare to use maps and their initiative in similar rock climbing tasks in Southern Norway. Private Mellor, is an old student of Dearsiide Modern School, and worked et Goldthorpe Main Colliery before joining the Army.
