Goldthorpe Soldier Back From Korea By Air
On his way home from the battlefields of Korea by air ambulance is 27 year-old L/Cpl Ernest Johnson, second son of Mrs. M. A. Pounder and the late Mr. H. Johnson, 18 Wellington Street, Goldthorpe, suffering from snow blindness and a nerve affliction.
Ernest, who lives with his wife at 46, Nether Hall Road, Doncaster, was a prisoner of war in Japanese hands for four years during the last world war.
Ernest, who was on reserve after the war, was recalled to Korea some months ago, from his post-war job at Bembergs, Doncaster, and has been serving in the famous 29th Brigade with the “Gloucesters.”
Interviewed by a “South Yorkshire Times” reporter this week, Mrs. Pounder said that her son’s wife, formerly Miss Janet Russell, of 5, Derwent Gardens, Goldthorpe, received a telegram at her telling her Doncaster home, telling her not to write any more, as her husband was on his way home. She is expecting him today.
Mr and Mrs Johnson, who have been married four years, took up residence at Doncaster over six months ago, when he was working at Bembergs and she was a post woman.
