Posthumous M. M.

On October 5th, 1943, Pte. Edward Frank Shardlow of Gladstone Arms, Clay Cross, Derbyshire, held his ground in a forward position firing his Bren gun at enemy infantry 400 yards away until ordered to withdraw.

As a result of this bravery Pte. Shardlow was awarded the Military Medal, but was later killed in action.

A Goldthorpe boy, he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Shardlow, who previously resided in Probert Avenue, leaving when he was 13 years of age.  Mrs. Shardlow was a native of Goldthorpe.

Pte. Shardlow was killed a few days before his 21st birthday.  His mother and father have received a letter of sympathy and condolence from the Company Commander, who says that he would have been recommended for the D. C. M., but this medal is not awarded posthumously.
