New Rector of Barnburgh

The Rev. E. P. Cook Appointed The Rev. Edward Penketh Cook. M.A., Vicar of Christ Church, Pitsmoor, Sheffield, for the last ten years, is to be the new Rector of Barnburgh.

Mr. Cook will preach his farewell sermon at Christ Church on Oct. 25th and a few days later he will be instituted at Barnburgh.

Mr. Cook is native of St. Helen’s. Lancashire, but has been in South Yorkshire for nearly 30 years. It is an indication of the friendly relations between Mr. Cook and his parishioners that he has held all his livings for long periods.

Educated at Cowley School, St. Helen’s, and Liverpool College, Mr. Cook became a scholar of Jesus College, Cambridge, from 1894 to 1897, and obtained his B.A. with honours in mathematics. He then went as a student to Ridley Hall. Cambridge, for a year and from 1898 to 1906 was curate of Christ Church, Southport. Then he became Rector of Fishtoft, Lincolnshire, and remained there until 1914 when he went to Doncaster as Vicar of St. Mary’s, and remained there for 18 years.

While in Doncaster Mr. Cook took a leading part in the schemes for building a new Church Hall at Wheatley Hills, at a cost of £1,000, and a new Parish Hall in Beckett Road at a cost of between £3,000 and £4,000.

He was also an active member of the Doncaster Musical Society and of the Danum Literary Society.

Keenly interested in lay readers he has been a member of the Lay Readers’ Board for many years, and a Surrogate since 1918.
